GEOMETRICAL ILLUSIONS
The Ponzo illusion in a
realistic setting: the
superimposed horizontal line
in the background looks longer
than the one in the
foreground, but they are both
equal in extent.
In the photograph to the left
the upper horizontal bar
superimposed on the road looks
longer than the lower one.
Both bars are equal in length,
however. Although the illusion
is a striking one, it raises a
question sometimes asked about
geometrical illusions: Why
expend an enormous effort
studying an apparently esoteric
phenomenon, one that seems to
have little to do with
explaining how we perceive the
world?
