  6. superimposed horizontal line 
  7. in the background looks longer 
  8. than the one in the 
  9. foreground, but they are both 
  10. equal in extent.

  13. the upper horizontal bar 
  14. superimposed on the road looks 
  15. longer than the lower one. 
  16. Both bars are equal in length, 
  17. however. Although the illusion 
  18. is a striking one, it raises a 
  19. question sometimes asked about 
  20. geometrical illusions: Why 
  21. expend an enormous effort 
  22. studying an apparently esoteric 
  23. phenomenon, one that seems to 
  24. have little to do with 
  25. explaining how we perceive the 
  26. world?
